83,000 Captured in the War on Terror... Is that All?
November 24, 2005 06:13 PM EST

You would think that when you have a lot of people that want you dead you would be happy to know that a lot of them can't get you anymore. That would be the smart thing to do.

But when dealing with the media and liberals, smart just isn't a word that comes to mind. Naturally the media is trying to turn this into something bad, and liberals are well they're being liberals. More concerned about being nice to terrorists than getting them off the streets.

According to the AP, since the beginning of the war back in 2001 we have taken 83,000 prisoners over the last four years, and we still have about 14,000 in custody. Most of those are in Iraq. My first reaction to this was: "We have 83,000 terrorists in prison? Good." Then it was: we only have 14,000 right now? Is that all?"

I know it's impossible to catch all of them, but shouldn't we try anyway? We are at war with a bunch of fanatics that can't be negotiated with. We can't sign a treaty with al-qaida. So logic would say the more we have off the streets killing people or plotting attacks the better.

But usually logic doesn't dictate anything. Andrew Sullivan, his usual hyper self is worried that we might torture these poor souls. He paints a picture of an America straight out of Orwells 1984, and claims that we reserve the right to torture. The last time I checked I hadn't heard anyone from the adminstration make that argument. I think what they said was that since these idiots weren't fighting for a country's military that should not be afforded the same rights under the Geneva convention. Sounds good to me. After all if locking them away, without a trial, is the only way to keep them from killing people, well that's just fine with me.

As far as the torture goes, they have been screaming that since the beginning. Remember when we first brought them into Gitmo? They were screaming then. Never mind that they say, and everyone knows that they are well fed and well treated it still makes a good effort to stop the war against the terrorists. A war the left has never wanted to wage. So they whine the whole way.

Locking away terrorists isn't torture. And locking them away keeps our people and our troops safe. Let's hope that we get more of these monsters out of the way.
