What to do About the Border
December 08, 2005 10:49 AM EST

Forget amnesty, or guest workers. Build the fence along the border, don't talk about it, get it done. In fact if the GOP wins in '08(I think they will) that should be first order of business. Building a barrier that all but the most libertarian or left wing wants would be a sure hit.

Why is this so important? Because our southern border has been wide open for decades, and neither party has been willing to do something about it, afraid of angering mexican americans, or business interests that rely on illegal immigrant labor. Rhetoric here is not enough. President Bush, for all of his strengths, has been incredibly weak about border security.

It's time to put pressure on Mexico. Asking President Fox, or whoever is in charge, nicely doesn't seem to work. After all, why should they listen? They get to export their unemployed underclass to America where we have to deal with them. We give them medical treatment, social services basically everything an american citizen gets. Plus as a bonus the immigrants send money back home, which their relatives spend in Mexico helping their economy limp along. If Mexico can't send its poor huddled masses to us, they will actually have to make some changes in their own country. After all it is Fox's Government that prints pamphlets on telling illegals on how to cross the border safely so they can make it to the U.S. It's time we let him know that we will consider this an attack on American soverignty.

Lastly it's time we did something here. They are called illegal immigrants for a reason, it's because they came here illegally. Round them up and send them back. Do you think Mexico would be so tolerant or welcoming to illegal immigrants from America. Imagine if millions of Americans moved to the border towns, demanded bi lingual education and all other kinds of concessions. Yeah, I can't imagine it either. And I don't think Mexico, or any sane country, would be so accomadating.

President Bush has been a great leader in fighting terrorists, in protecting our own borders from masses of people, including criminal gangs, and undubtedly some terrorists infiltrating this country from Mexico, he has a less than stellar record. That has to change, and now.
