Abortions Headed in the Right Direction- But Still a Long Way to go
January 10, 2006 12:27 PM EST

An article on the Chicago Sun-Times website says that there were 41,577 abortions in Illinois, a thirty year low. Both sides are taking credit for the drop. It's amazinf that the people who so loudly defend abortion claim(with a straight face) that the want, in the new slogan of the era, abortion to be safe, rare, and legal.

The pro choice side claims increased access to birth control is to explain the downward trend while the pro life crowd claims that it is getting its message out. While an increase in contraceptive use certainly prevents pregnancy, and thus an abortion, it doesn't really explain fewer abortions. Birth control has been readily available for decades, it's not as if the pill were only made available last year. Birth control has been available to women even before Roe V. Wade. So this really can't explain a low in abortions.

The number of people who consider themselves pro life has gone up. In the early 1980's the number of people who considered themselves pro life was about 30%, today it's about 50%. An increased number of people against abortion means fewer abortions.

But is this cause to celebrate? 41,577 abortions in Illinois, 21,786 in Cook county alone. Imagine a headline that read "21,786 homicides in Chicago" would anyone think this is a good thing, even if it was a 30 year low? Well that's what we have. 41,577 court sanctioned homicides, and that's just one state. People can find tears for the likes of Tookie Williams and want his life spared, but celebrate death of the unborn and the inevitable cheapening of life that follows.

Any abortion, except for saving the life of the mother, rape, and incest is too many. Just as one person in slavery is too many, one person in a concentration camp too many, one abortion is too many. It is an absolute moral evil that cannot be smiled upon by any country that considers itself civilzed.

The pro life movement is heading in the right direction, but it needs to move faster. Lives depend on it.
