We'll Regret This Port Mess One Day
March 12, 2006 11:37 AM EST

There is no creature so cowardly, or so stupid, as a congressmen who is running for reelection. And I can see why. In the day and age of lifetime membership to the house, the thought of working for a living must be terrifying to them.

I mean all of those perks, free trips, junkets, gone by the will of the voters. Of course congress silenced the voters years ago through gerrymandering, but enough angry voters could overcome even the most politically drawn district lines.

Case in point. The Dubai "crisis" is now over. I bet congressmen King(R-NY) and Senator Reid(idiot-NV) are all smiles today. After all they saved the U.S. from an invasion. I mean, dear God, a foreign company owning property in America and running American facilities. That simply can't be tolerated. I guess next Senator Clinton will have to demand that the Chinese give up control of the ports on the west coast. I mean if the UAE, with its military weakness and small population, is a threat to national security then surely the Chinese are a thousand times more dangerous. I suppose if an Australian company had gotten the job they would have objected because of the danger of possible kangaroo attacks.

All that has been accomplished is to anger a friendly government in an unfriendly region at a time when we could some friends. What will congressman King say if the UAE no longer allows the U.S. military to station ships at Dubai? That it's not fair? What will American corporations say when they find that they have a hard time doing business in the UAE? Well, thank congress is all they really can do.

The government is said to be furious at both political parties for this betrayal. There really is no other word for it. The UAE has been a moderate, if undemocratic, country in the region. An ally to the U.S. and congress knifed them in the back simply to score political points so they could keep their jobs.

Security was never in danger. The coast guard would have been in charge of security and patrolling the ports and American long shoremen would have been working the docks. No, congress, a group of jackals that likes to think themselves as American statesmen who cravenly sold out a friend to the U.S.

Their behavior shows me two things. First of all we need term limits. These people(and I use that word in the loosest sense.) shouldn't have lifetime jobs, where they get reelected with 60% of the votes because they are in safe districts. They need to remember that they are servants of the people, and the best way to remember that is not to be so far removed from the people, and not to be an elected official forever. The second thing this has shown me is that courage, and brains are not important to get elected to congress, and that voters probably don't care if the candidates have those qualities or not.
