Senate Shows it's Not Serious About Illegal Immigration
April 06, 2006 10:19 AM EST

The Senate has unveiled a comrpomise bill on immigration that they hope will past muster in congress. They should be worried about whether it will pass muster with the American people. Terrified of the election in November they are trying to please everyone and in the end will probably please no one.

While the bill does not come out and call it amnesty, the bill does make it very easy for illegals to stay here legally. Those here longer than five years would have to learn english, pay some back taxes, and they could be on their way to being American citizens.( Funny, with all those Mexican flags they've been waving you would think citizenship is the last thing they want.) Those here less than two years would have to go to the end of the line and come here legally.

So why the cutoff? If we are going to reward illegal behavior then why is someone who has been breaking the law for a shorter amount of time treated more harshly than someone who has been breaking it for a longer amount of time? That is what we are doing, rewarding illegal behavior. They broke the law in entering the country, and now we are saying "that's allright, stay."

Aside from approving of breaking the law one can see a mile away that any enforcement provision in this law is never actually going to be enforced. We are counting on the cooperation of criminals to step forward and leave the country and wait their turn. My skepticism is overflowing. I'm sure they will be very cooperative. Yes, they will leave this country and go back to wherever they came from and wait there turn.

The bill does not mention a border fence, or any kind of penalty for breaking the law by entering this country illegally. Maybe it will end up in a final compromise, but I am not going to hold my breath. So we have a fast track for illegals who have been here longer than five years, and those here less than two years have to leave and come legally. But everyone knows that's not really going to be enforced. So what do we call that in the real world? It's spelled a-m-n-e-s-t-y.
