The Da Vinci Code film based on Dan Brown's novel has only one goal, and that is to try to shake the foundations of Christianity and leave confusion in its wake. It is designed to offend and negate the very reason why Jesus Christ came to this earth. Christ did NOT come to this earth to engage in lustful desires. His purpose was to do his Father's will, God's will in heaven.
"...I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."--John 10:10 (NIV)
A plan that included eventually suffering and dying on a harsh cross, BUT, rising again (Christ's mission did not stop at the grave) and ascending to heaven where He will soon return. He reveals his deity over and over. Jesus was not merely a man concerned with living out His life on this earth. He was and IS, God.
"Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." --Revelation 22:12,13 (NIV)
The Da Vinci Code makes a mockery of Jesus Christ suggesting that He and Mary Magdalene married and had children whose line exists today, but a secret society conspired to keep it secret. This assertion in the book and the film (starring Tom Hanks, directed by Ron Howard) has Christians like myself, upset.
As the film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, amid much hype and pomp, the film's stars had their say to those who want to boycott the film. Actor Tom Hanks said, "Everyone should lighten up, it's a story." Tom Hanks has been a reputable actor in my book, but for him to participate in a film which twists the Christian faith, I've lost all respect for him.
"It's supposed to be entertainment, not theology," said director Ron Howard. So I guess it's entertaining to him to distort the truth on film about Christianity. If The Da Vinci Code were no big deal, then Howard would not have also said, "It causes people to stop and think about what they believe. I think that's healthy." Obviously, Howard wants to promote the work of Dan Brown, and throw another sick view of Christianity into the mix. It will not help anyone to take a closer look at their faith, but will instead bring confusion.
One film that did cause people to look closer at their faith was Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. The Passion grabbed people's hearts and touched lives. It truly helped Christians to put in to perspective just how much Christ suffered for the world, it showed how much He would have gone through to reconcile man to God. And there was a triumph at the end as Christ rises from the grave to eventually go back to His Father in heaven. It was an expression of love.
The Da Vinci Code will never reach the same level of superb cinematic quality as The Passion. The Passion caused many to be more rooted in their faith, and it brought Christianity to the forefront of the film industry.
Clearly The Da Vinci Code was meant to mess with the minds of people who are on the fence about Christianity, or people who are unfamiliar with the faith. I say to anyone who wants an accurate account of who Jesus Christ was, visit your local church, and pick up a copy of the Holy Bible. The Bible is clear on who Jesus really is.
To counter the false claims made in The Da Vinci Code movie and Dan Brown's book, Dr. D. James Kennedy and Coral Ridge Ministries is releasing The Da Vinci Delusion DVD (see link below). I think it's an important release to keep Christians aligned with God and not be attempted to take a wayward path, and to offer a clear and truthful perspective to others on what Christianity is about and who Jesus was.
As Christians, it's not just the simple act of practicing our faith, but engaging in a close spiritual relationship with our Holy Father. And the way His son Jesus is portrayed in The Da Vinci Code is disgraceful! To Christians who plan to see the film, or read Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code, be careful what you put into your soul.
