Brattleboro, Vermont is not too far from where I sit — fully clothed.
I understand that that community has its share of nude bodies testing the proprieties. Liberals tend to inform media that whatever is not violent is all right with them. If mortals wish to strip down to the skin in public spaces, fine.
Vermont is known for its individualism, as is New Hampshire. Maine, where I live, likewise likes to post its own independent streaks. Therefore, there are these three New England states that are known for lowering the bar.
Lisa Rathke of AP writes that "nudity isn't new here (in Brattleboro). Usually it bares itself in more subtle places than a downtown parking lot, though.
"This summer, a group of teenagers has disrobed near restaurants, bookstores and galleries, igniting a debate about whether this bohemian southern Vermont town should ban a practice that has been tolerated until now.
"’Brattleboro tends to be a laid-back town and pretty accepting of the unusual, but this is really pushing limits," said Police Chief John Martin.
"’It's clearly to outrage people, it's clearly rebelliousness,’ he said."
While young American bodies are daily strewn about Afghanistan and Iraq — all because of Muslim slaughtering Muslim — perhaps American youth disrobing is not the worst act on life’s stage. It could be a matter of relativism.
However, for persons interested in keeping morality bases clean and clear, the Vermont capers are not something to be tolerated. However, there are others who conclude that to come down hard on the naked bodies could spur the enthusiasts to more public displays.
It might be something like prostitution. Though authorities attempt to wipe it out in one neighborhood, it simply moves to another section of town for the same sale.
That very well could happen if the police came out in force against nudity. Close it down on Street A and it springs up on Avenue B several miles away. In other words, those intent on nudity in public are intent on nudity in public. A boisterous outcry could only fire up the show all the more.
It is certain now that autumn has come to New England, winter is not far away. So when the blizzards hit hard here, it is fairly certain that nudity will no longer be a pastime.
