Does Anyone Understand Genesis?
September 24, 2006 10:00 AM EST

In the year 1990, on Easter Sunday, in the state of Pennsylvania, a particular person went visiting to a church in his area. As he sat in the pastor’s Sunday School class, a lady stood up and asked “How can I teach my teenagers about Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden, when they are taught about evolution in school?”. What she was saying is that she was trying to teach her children about God, and the public school system, namely biological science class, was contradicting her and presenting the book of Genesis to be a myth. Does this sound familiar?

The particular person in question sympathized with the lady, and he agreed that this was a very good and worthwhile question, even for Easter Sunday. Although he had not paid very much attention to the (so called) controversy, he felt that it was past the time to learn the answer. He prepared himself to hear something profound from the pastor, because he knew that when his children reached middle school age, he would be faced with the same problem.

Unfortunately, the particular person in question was deeply disappointed. All the pastor would say was four words, which were “Just believe the Bible”. What??? After years of seminary training, that is the best that the theologian could come up with? What the pastor said was good advice, but it was not practical, and was not useful. What was the lady suppose to tell her kids, “Just believe the Bible”, and all their uncertainties would (by faith) go away? Just as others do, that pastor was ducking the issue, and using “faith in the scriptures” as a cure for the lack of understanding. It was right then and there that the particular person in question decided that he would resolve that issue, and learn what the truth really was. The issue was resolved in 44 months.

If you go to the website of the National Center for Science Education, you will see under their name the words “Defending the Teaching of Evolution in the Public Schools”. Why isn’t their motto “Teaching the Truth in Public Schools”, or something to that effect? If you read further, the site says “The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) defends the teaching of evolution in public schools. We are a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information and advice to keep evolution in the science classroom and "scientific creationism" out. NCSE is the only national organization to specialize in this issue.” What is the premise of evolution? It is a supposition, built upon a second supposition (Primordial Soup theory), which is built upon a third supposition (Nebular Hypothesis, which has been proven to be in error), which was also built upon a fourth supposition which is the “Big Bang” theory. Why is the NCSE so against Creation Science (CS)? Mainly it’s because the NCSE declares that there was no deity involved in the origin of earthlings. There is a second reason, which the NCSE does not comment much about, but it’s the only part of their objection that is true. Creation Science mostly teaches false, and foolish doctrines. The premise of CS is that the Earth and universe are less than 10,000 years old. They assume that position because they think that Adam & Eve were the first humans God made, and even Genesis declares that to be wrong. Since they believe that from the period of Creation Week, to the “fall” of mankind (in 4267 BC), to the present time, is only an elapsed time of 6 to 10 thousand years. Where CS goes wrong is that Creation Week was in 4.6 Billion BC, and Adam was put in the Garden of Eden in 7200 BC. Genesis chapter one explains what happened on Earth those first 4 billion years, and is not a “creation account”. In fact, Genesis does not have any description of how the Earth was created, nor of the original life forms that were put on the Earth during Creation Week. Therefore, what is the bottom line? When the atheists come to do battle in the “arena of origins”, often held in a court of law, they come prepared. They bring solid evidence of a 4.6 billion year solar system (rocks from the Moon), radiometric dating of (1) trilobites from 500 Million BC, (2) dimetrodons from 300 Million BC, (3) dinosaurs from 150 Million BC, and (4) Homo Erectus from 400,000 BC, all in an attempt to prove their (false) conclusion of “evolution”.

On the other hand, what do the disciples of CS show up with? Debating skills (used to defend a indefensible position), incorrect “literal interpretation” of Genesis as evidence to prove that (1) there was no death on Earth before the advent of Adam & Eve (modern mankind), (2) the geologic strata and the fossil record are as such because of the flood of Noah (in 2611 BC), and (3) radiometric dating can not be trusted. As a fall back plan, they run to “faith in Christ”, and “the scriptures stand on their own merits”. Someone should ask them about their R.A.T.E experiment, and why their own testing for the age of the Earth gave “undesirable results”, proving the Earth to be over 4 billion years in age. Also, what inadequate excuses do they use for the reality of prehistoric man, outside of denial?

Creation Science is not alone in the travesty of Genesis representation. Theistic evolutionists compromise with the atheists, and call God a liar, by denying the literal meaning of Exodus 20:11, which says “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it”. Ever heard the line “a day to the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day”? So, when God told Israel to march around Jericho for six days once, and seven times on the seventh day, shouldn’t Joshua and company still be marching around the walls? Actually, if that were the case, they would have only completed three days of marching, and waiting another 380 years for the fourth day to arrive!!! So, in the last 1800 years, how far has theology advanced in it’s understanding of Genesis? This month (September 2006), that “particular person”, was listening to a Bible teaching radio station. A program was being aired that promised to explain the book of origins (Genesis), in several half hour segments. Of course, that particular person was eager to “listen to the competition”. He was curious to see how certain segments of Genesis would be explained. Sorry to say, it was disappointing. The first half hour program used the first twenty minutes to dance around the principle of “faith”, going back and forth into the Epistles (written letter books in the New Testament). Only six minutes was used to basically read Genesis 1:1, and do more “dancing”. The program didn’t even attempt to nail down when “the beginning” occurred. Wouldn’t people want to know that? The second half hour program exposed the lack of knowledge and understanding of the teacher when they rambled through the first five days in Genesis chapter one. They were erroneously referred to as being the first five days of Creation Week. That second program probably would be acceptable if only addressing a “Bible believing” audience. But to others, it was a charade. After reading “And the Earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved across the face of the waters”, the teacher lost all credibility. Since God created our universe, how did the initial state of the Earth come into being? Where did the water come from? Since “God is light, and in Him is no darkness”, where did God have to go in order to find the darkness? Is this the old “order out of chaos” crutch? Does anyone understand Genesis? If so, how can any school board ever dream of creating a realistic curriculum without first obtaining their expert technical assistance? If not, shall the students gain anything worthwhile from the joyride? Without correct training, introducing Genesis to students would be a big joke, doing more harm than any measure of good. It would be a shame to waste the students’ academic time with just the inept and shallow doctrine of Intelligent Design. It tells the student nothing about the past history of life on Earth. Teach the students the real truth of Genesis.
