Foley : An Example of Non-Republicanism
October 05, 2006 11:54 AM EST

One of the finest examples of what I call non-Republicanism can be found in Republican Congressman Mark Foley from Florida. Now we all know that what he has done is immoral, wrong, and he simply must be investigated as well as anyone else involved in this meaningless parade of vulgarity that he was caught up in.

I consider myself to be conservative and a Republican simply because of what the Republican party as a whole stands for, but this man Foley, like many others is not a real Republican. LifeSite news has pointed out that he is the type Republican that should have gone over to the Democratic side of the fence a long time ago. He is a pro-choice and pro-gay rights kind of moderate to slightly liberal Republican. That is really nothing new. There are several moderate to liberal republicans and even a whole slough of gay Republican called The Log Cabin Republicans, but these few and far between bring a bad image to the rest of the conservative leaning political organization. Moderates like John McCain are o.k. but Republicans in this day in age are know for their zero tolerance stance on terrorists, their strong stand on moral values like standing against abortion, same-sex marriage, and so forth.

Despite what the party stands for as a whole, the image of the GOP is damaged because of the actions of a few. I do condemn what Mr. Foley has done and he should be prosecuted for this, but that is no reason to punish the rest of the party for the actions of one man.

I still believe that Republicans as a whole are conservative, God fearing, good-hearted men and women who still represent the majority of America and her values. Republicans are still the only party to stand up to the ACLU on most anything including illegal immigration, same-sex marriage, abortion, private land ownership, and numerous other things. The GOP is the only party to take a zero tolerance stance on terrorism where we either capture of kill the terrorists on the spot where we find them, no questions asked. The GOP is still the only party where capitalism and not socialism is the policy for the country simply because it works. The GOP is the party who firmly believes in lower taxes contributing to a greater economy.

Was Foley wrong to do what he did? ABSOLUTELY! Should he be prosecuted? ABSOLUTELY. Should this be investigated further? IT SURE SHOULD! However, the GOP as a whole should not be responsible for the actions of one man. The GOP is still the party who believes in personal responsibility after all, and this is the perfect case in which to exercise that belief.
