By Sher Zieve – Muslim cab drivers at Minneapolis Airport have refused to transport passengers who carry alcohol in their bags. According to the Airport Commission, as Muslims view the animals are "unclean", they have also refused to transport seeing-eye dogs that accompany their blind owners.
Although non-denominational chapels are available for any religious prayers, Muslims are now demanding their own separate prayer rooms at Minneapolis Airport. Indications are that they will soon demand these private Muslim prayer rooms at airports across the US.
Minnesota Somali Muslim leader Fuad Ali told airport officials Tuesday: "Where you have Christians and Muslims praying at the same time, it will create a problem."
Minneapolis Airport Director Steve Wareham said that if the commission granted the Muslims’ request, the airport would have to install similar facilities for every religious faith.
Regarding Muslim cab drivers’ refusal to transport certain passengers, Wareham said that should only be done if the driver believes his safety is at risk and added: "To be refused service by a taxi driver is, frankly, seen as an insult, and we don't want our customers to experience it."
