I have been deeply troubled in recent weeks, especially since the 2006 election, over the fact that many Conservative writers willingly articulate a litany of conservative values and desired character traits that voters should look for in potential political candidates but stop there without urging any action. The mantra is, simply, don’t vote for non-conservatives in either party. This is done, in spite of the fact, there is nearly universal agreement that candidates, who run as conservatives, do not end up representing conservative interests once they arrive in Washington. A prime example is, clearly, the "big spender", George W. Bush!
A fact that is even more troubling, to me, is the fact that the majority of writers for conservative organizations, the Patriot, Human Events, The Conservative Voice, and the Heritage Foundation, are advocating that conservatives direct their efforts toward reforming the current political parties, particularly the GOP. The goal is, of course, to have a grassroots upraising that will result in the "taking back" of the GOP in order to elect a truly conservative president (ala, 1984 with the election of Reagan).
Let me state this as plainly as I can. There is no hope -- none, zero, zilch, of reforming the GOP! I have carefully observed the party leadership over several years as they have cowardly given in to liberal pressures and abandoned conservative principles time after time. The examples are apparent to anyone who has paid attention, but let me state the obvious. Unrestrained government spending, the lack of Social security reform, the lack of confirmation of judges, failure to abandon the practice of earmarking, failure to implement lobbying reform, an unwillingness to reduce the size of government, and failure to enforce immigration laws/control the borders. The current GOP leadership lacks the will to advance any conservative causes!
It is no secret that party leadership also punishes any member who doesn’t "go along" with the party’s position. This punishment includes stripping the renegade member of any meaningful positions of leadership, the withdrawal of funding for re-election campaigns, and cutting off the flow of federal funds back to the member’s district or state.
In addition, there is no real opportunity for individual constituents to influence elected officials on important issues. I, personally, have written 100s of letters to my Representative, Senators and President and have found that my influence has been negligible. I believe that the elected officials never see my letters. I have evidence that staff members merely send back form letters, which never address the specific issues that were raised in the original letter. It doesn’t matter one wit what I think because I do not determine whether they are reelected or defeated in the next election. So… and my point is? There will be no opportunity for a conservative takeover of the GOP from within.
The only way for conservatives to advance their cause is to let the GOP dissolve in an ash heap of failure as they did in the 2006 election. Conservatives must cast their lot with a new party. We must withdraw ALL financial support of the GOP.
I strongly urge you and other non-elected conservative leaders to put in place the organization necessary to elect a conservative president in 2008! This nation is at a crossroads and I fear that if change does not occur soon that this country will become an entirely different country than the one our Founding Fathers intended it to be when they wrote our Constitution. I, for one, am very comfortable casting my lot with the Constitution Party
Call me an alarmist if you wish but my observations are correct! Someone has to be the Paul Revere and the Patrick Henry of our day! If necessary, I will be that person.
