In my little town of Clear Lake we have three women who have placed us on the map, but in a negative light. We have Dr. Clara Harris who ran over her Orthodontist husband three time with his daughter in the passenger seat watching; we have Andrea Yates who drowned her five kids; and now we have Navy Captain and Astronaut Lisa Nowak, who the Orlando police believe tried to murder a junior grade officer in the Air Force by the name of Captain Colleen Shipman.

These women all have something in common, regardless of how despicable and outrageous their conduct, each, predicated on their instant celebrity status, has found a vocal group of supporters. Clara Harris has a web page devoted to her, paid for by her "friends": Andrea Yates had the National Organization of Women planning candlelight vigils for her; and now Silvestro's Italian Restaurant in Cocoa Beach hosted a fundraiser for Captain Nowak.

What about having a web page devoted to the man Dr. Harris murdered or better yet his daughter, a girl who had to see the car impact her dad's body and then feel the impact of the car as it rolled up onto that body, all while hearing her dad as he screamed out in agony? What about having a night vigil for the five children Andrea Yates drowned, one by one? What about hosting a fundraiser for Captain Colleen Shipman, the woman who was assaulted and possibly marked for death by Captain Nowak?

As far as I am concerned Silvestro's restaurant is engaging in a cheap publicity stunt for a woman who disgraced NASA, the Astronaut Corps, the United States Navy, the United States Navy Officer Corps, her husband and children and very possibly could have killed an innocent human being. If someone is willing to host a fundraiser for Captain Shipman I'll pay for a table, if for no other reason than to champion the victim.
