Former Senator Jim Talent gave a speech at the Heritage Foundation recently. He discussed the need to increase defense spending in order to prepare for the threats, that we are not able to foresee, that may lie ahead. Talent said he believes the United States is "in at least as dangerous a situation as we were during the Cold War." The potential threat of terrorists obtaining a nuclear device is far too great. It rivals the threat imposed on us from the Soviet Union. The difference is, these terrorists have no official country of origin. They are not fighting in defense of their own country. They will not follow the rules of war. One cannot negotiate with them. Terrorists pose a much greater threat than North Korea, Iran or China. It is easier for countries such as Iran to back these terrorist organizations to make the world think they are neutral in this war on terror. They are not. By funding the terrorists who, in turn, attack our interests abroad, countries like Iran are able to divert attention away from their own actions (nuclear program) and put the focus on these terror cells/groups.
In a time when the Democrat controlled Congress wishes to cut spending on the war in Iraq, remove our troops, and basically break down the military by slashing the defense budget, it may seem to you that they are working on the side of the terrorists. It seems that way sometimes. Are we sure that Jack Murtha is not involved with Hezbollah? What will these Democrats do when there is another attack on our soil? Possibly one much worse that anticipated. We are all waiting to wake up one morning and hear of something far worse than 9/11. Who will the Democrats blame? Republicans? President Bush? Nobody? They certainly will not blame themselves for the mistakes they are making with these non-binding resolutions. As we see in the Senate, a resolution such as this was blocked. However, it was passed in the House. Regardless, Senators are working harder on things that matter to Americans. Nancy Pelosi and her house are crumbling. The first 100 days are turning into the first 100 mistakes. Limit defense spending, limit our involvement in the Middle East and ignore the threats from around the world, which is exactly what Democrats are doing now, will ultimately destroy not only American credibility, but our security which we hold so dear. Of course Democrats will state they believe removing our troops and redeploying them elsewhere will improve our security and protect our other interests. They need to provide a list with locations and specifics, which of course, they never do. Instead of wasting tax payer time and money debating resolutions that mean nothing, why not follow the new strategy in Iraq and let our armed services do their jobs with full support? Why not allow our troops to be more aggressive? Give them more leeway when engaging with these enemies, who obviously have no rules of engagement against us. Allow our border patrol agents to do their jobs without a threat of going to prison. Give our National Guard, stationed on the border, weapons so that illegals will think twice about crossing the border. We wouldn’t be the first country to have part of our army securing our border.
The first thing you do in warfare is identify your enemy. Slowly but surely, it seems, many Democrats in Congress are becoming the real enemies of the United States.
