Mitt Romney was just on 60 minutes on Sunday. Mike Wallace interviewed him. Of course Mike decided to zoom right in on the fact that Romney is a Mormon. Asking multiple questions about this fact, Wallace blurted out, ‘did you have pre-marital sex with your wife’.
Everybody was glued to the TV after that insult. What business is it of Wallace’s, CBS News or their audience? None. I do not recall any news agency, including CBS, asking Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama if they had pre-marital sex with their significant others. It is not our business. However, if you saw the way Romney responded, you would see a man who can handle stupid questions with dignity. I’ll admit, when Romney first entered the race, I was skeptical about his Mormon background, much like other political writers. I have taken this with a grain of salt because I do not believe that a Mormon would make a bad president. Nor do I think that Mitt Romney, this particular Mormon, would be a bad president. I have studied religion for the better part of my life. Included in this study, was the reading of the Book of Mormon. Although I do not agree with its content, I certainly cannot criticize those who are in the Mormon church.
Yes, I understand that many Mormons both in the past, and no doubt currently, are racist, polygamists and even child molesters. But if you compare these few to the many you are being stereotypical. I’m sure you will find other Christians and Non-Christians that are guilty of those crimes both in the past and currently. The truth is that the Mormon faith is a different approach to Christianity. They share the same beliefs as most Christians. Personally, I think people are critical of what they do not understand. I would invite many members of the media to do some research before pronouncing all Mormons as ‘bad’ people.
With all this talk about religion influencing government and the law suits demanding the removal of Christian monuments from public land, you would figure that we should have an atheist as president. But, we do not, and probably will never have one. As this country is primarily Christian and the founding fathers themselves were Christian, you would believe that these principles have always applied to our government.
Mike Wallace turned 89 a week ago. Happy Birthday Mike! Has he lost his mind? Perhaps, after all he treated Iranian President Ahmadinejad much better than a fellow American. A retirement party for Mike Wallace is long over due.
