Over 66% of Americans do not like the immigration bill that the President is trying to slide by the people who voted him into office the second time around. My feeling is that the President has lost touch with his base. One disturbing comment made by the President is “Do you want to scare the American people?” This was in response to his critics. Yes, I am critical of the President on this issue, so I must answer him. The only thing that is scaring the American people Mr. President is your bill. You say it is not amnesty, but when you grant legal citizenship to 12 million people, that is amnesty. Supporters will say ‘we have a plan to have heads of households ‘Touchback’ to their home countries!’ And you will monitor this how? It will not work.
I realize that you cannot go around and round up 12 million people, put them on busses and deport all of them.
But there are some things you can do:
Enforce the immigration laws we already have in place from 20 years ago, that most seem to have forgotten about.
Illegal aliens should not stay here permanently, they should receive a certain amount of time in our country and then must report to immigration to be sent back to their home country. Then they can apply for citizenship and wait in line like the rest of the world. Initial (honest) verification can done by their employer. The employer must report all employees working for them legal or non-legal. The ID card that has been proposed is not a bad idea. All non-legal residents must report to obtain a work-visa/ ID card for “x” amount of time, and if they do not report first or do not report in after the visa expires they are charged and deported instantly. Authorities will know who they are based on these requirements.
We must give our law enforcement officers more ways and legal rights to enforce these laws. Any employer who hires anyone illegal, or does not report his workers should not face a slap on the wrist, but major fines and jail time, along with the possible closure of his business. We should also step up employment enforcement raids to help enforce this law.
During this process it is critical that we enforce the border 100%. Do not put up a fence that is 20 miles long and have 1 agent guard it. We must put up the full fence and have more agents guarding our border. They must be able to enforce it by any means necessary and should not be punished for following orders or enforcing OUR NATION’S laws. We are a nation of laws and we enforce them. The people who are coming in from Mexico are not US citizens, they do not and should not have legal rights in our country at all, they should be dealt with humanely but firmly. Our agents are the first line of defense and should have every resource to defend our border, much like our soldiers have over seas. 70% of Americans want new immigration standard and a border that stops illegals from entering the country. Let’s make this happen.
A few other concepts to consider:
- Invite all illegals who really don’t want to be US citizens to leave the country with no questions asked if they wish to apply for citizenship later they may.
- Update the 14th Amendment – Instead of making someone who is born in this country an instant US citizen, require that at least 1 parent be a US citizen before allowing the child to be granted the same privilege.
- Deport all jailed and imprisoned illegals so that it frees up the prison system and lowers the tax burden on our citizens.
This is not a process that is going to take a few months. It will take years, but if we start now then we will be on our way to making America safer and more secure.
