I may be the only American left, other than the President’s immediate family, who thinks he is doing a good job. I draw this conclusion based on the most recent GOP debate of Presidential candidates.

In debates, such as these, nothing is said off the cuff. There is nothing said that is not planned in advance. They all read the same polls. Those polls tell them Republicans and Conservatives in this country are frustrated with the President. A little further reading would have told them that we’re even more frustrated with Congress. Our frustration with the President is different from that of the Liberals. They have always hated him. We simply see lost opportunities.

What exactly do McCain, Romney, et. al., think they are gaining by acting as if they are running against George W. Bush? True enough, in a year, Hilary Clinton will try to paint the GOP nominee as being one in the flesh with W but how should that be combated? All they are doing now is depressing the Conservative base.

Criticizing the President right now is the cheapest shot there is. Basically, it puts you in the same league with Rosie O’Donnel and Michael Moore, among others. The President is an easy target. He’s a lame duck conducting a war that is dragging on in Iraq. But W is not the one who foolishly tried to keep the sex scandal of a Republican House member a secret. He’s not the one who got involved with Jack Abramoff.

The so-called GOP front runners (meaning the ones with the money) have become so cautious and calculated, they look and sound very little like the President, whose memory they invoke at every turn, Ronald Reagan. What exactly would Ronald Reagan have done differently in the last six years under the same circumstances as faced by President Bush? Would he have decided not to lower our taxes? Would he have not nominated Conservative judges? It was Ronald Reagan who gave us the eleventh commandment. Thou shalt not criticize a fellow Republican. This is a sad scene.

Most of the lower tier candidates, Tommy Thompson excluded, feeling less inhibited, have been more Reaganesque, especially Duncan Hunter. Would that we could combine them into one great candidate. As it is, they will likely split the true Conservative vote and allow one of the top three candidates (Fred Thompson is the wild card) to win.

The GOP base doesn’t want to hear what W should have done differently. We don’t want to hear our candidates parroting the enemy. We want to hear someone stand up and champion our core principals without fear or shame. The top tier candidates are only paying lip service to the legacy of Ronald Reagan.
