Inside the Asylum--A Belated Review
June 11, 2007 01:51 PM EST

It is customary to review recently published books but in the case of Inside the Asylum by Jed Babbin (published in 2004) I am making an exception due to his insightful view of the UN and Europe and his specific recommendations for resolving issues of grave concern to U.S. citizens. Mr. Babbin, former deputy undersecretary of Defense and current editor of Human Events, has forcefully laid out the failings of the UN, particularly the corrupt Oil for Food program. It appears that at least a 10% premium was added to invoices that Sadddam Hussein sent to the UN for payment. He subsequently pocketed cash in excess of $4 billion. As administrator of the Program, the UN received a 2% fee (approx. $1 billion) and was unable/unwilling to prevent this rip off or to insure that the food purchased/delivered was of good quality.

The UN is an organization that is adamant in its commitment to moral relativism. As a result it endorses such statements as "the U.S. is the real terrorists," " there is no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons", "any military action without UN approval is both illegal and illegitimate", "international law should take precedent over laws of individual nations", "Zionism is racism", and "a proper role for the UN is restraining the U.S."

The author contends that the UN is intent on subordinating the U.S. to its control. He believes it is morally bankrupt and cannot ever be reformed. For example, the UN, in the past, has been known to pass on military information to our enemies and insist that prior notification of where WMD inspections will take place be given.

He proposes the following actions to extricate the U.S. from this parasitic relationship.

  1. End our UN membership.
  2. Never again bring issues of weapons proliferation and terrorism before the Security Council.
  3. Reduce the rank of our representative below that of an Ambassador.
  4. Shut off all funding to the UN.
  5. Take direct action against those UN agencies that intend to directly harm the U.S.
  6. Establish a new organization composed of free and democratic countries that share our values and goals. An example is the eleven member Proliferation Security Initiative that intends to search ships, planes, trains, and trucks that are believed to be caring weapons and missiles.

The latter part of the book deals with why there is such friction between the European Union and the U.S. The instigators of this friction are France and Germany. They are not our allies; they are our enemies.

Babbin concludes that the U.S. must base its actions on the rightness of the cause and not look to the UN or to France and Germany for approval.
