Take a Hint From Louisiana
October 24, 2007 01:00 PM EST

So let me see if I have this straight. The people of Louisiana, the ones who suffered through Katrina, just elected a Republican governor and it wasn’t close. For the last two years I have, when given the opportunity, argued the point that the whole mess down there was the responsibility of the state government, which has been led by Democrat Kathleen Blanco.

No one has ever tracked down the millions of dollars, which was sent to Louisiana over the years supposedly for the purpose of maintaining and improving the levees. Someone down there should be prosecuted but the people have done the next best thing at the ballot box.

What this proves is that the GOP leadership, such as it is, never should have ceded the high ground to the Democrats. While the aftermath of Katrina was contributing to the Democratic takeover of Congress, the people of Louisiana were waiting to take care of business on their own.

Now, the President’s approval numbers may be in the thirties but the numbers for Congress are worse. And the President’s numbers weren’t above 50% when he was reelected. I hear people criticize the President for being stubborn, even arrogant. GOP leaders in Washington, who couldn’t be more out of touch with the grass roots, blame the President for the losses of 2006. They could not be more wrong. Would that they had exhibited a little of that stubbornness and arrogance they see in the President.

Republicans have only one option heading into 2008. Get back to basics. Stop trying to please people who won’t vote for them anyway. For once, show some courage, some backbone. Maintaining the current course guarantees defeat.
