According to most polls about 98% of Americans believe in God. You wouldn't know it from the cottage industry of books promoting atheism that have popped up and rocketed to the top of the best seller list. Men like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens have become famous by publishing their hate filled rants against religion.
There's nothing new in anything they write. Atheists have been around since the first days of Human civilization. And the atheists today make the same arguments that existed thousands of years ago.
What Hitchens and the others don't want to admit is that they are the biggest evangalists in the world right now. Out spreading the bad news of their faith. And that's what it is, a faith. The existence of God, or his non existence, is a statement of faith. It is not something that can be proven or disproven. When Hitchens proclaims that God doesn't exist he is making a statement of faith, no matter how much science he uses to back up the claim. Conversely when a theist claims that there is a God he is making a statement of faith, no matter what arguments he makes or what evidence he presents. Hitchens and the others can't disprove Gods existence no matter how much they want to, no matter how much they rant.
The arguments for Atheism are usually the product of a shallow mind, a large ego, and a paranoid psyche. The atheist, not wanting to admit that something more important than him exists, rages against God for not worshipping the atheist. OK, I jest, slightly. Atheists often lose their faith(what little they had when they were younger) for the most juvenille of reasons. Bad things happen, so God must not exist. A kid opens his eyes during prayer, doesn't see God and concludes there is no God. Many atheists believe that behind every tree is a fanatical believer out to force them to live in a Taliban style theocracy. How many theocratic countries are their in the world today? Three. Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan. And while most Atheists scream bloody murder about the religious beliefs of others, public displays of religion, and anything else they can think of to make their blood boil, they are usually silent on countries that deny the right to worship God. Countries like North Korea, China(where religion is controlled by Atheists) and Cuba for example. They don't mind because their religion(atheism) is dominant. They have an unholy war to stamp out God wherever they see him being worshipped. Now, this doesn't apply to all atheists, but to a sizable portion of them.
Hitchens, for example, concludes that religion is the source of all evil in the world. Now, it's true that people have done bad things in the name of God. But what about the atheistic communism that Hitchens spent so much of his life shilling for? I would venture to guess that the red army, godless all, had much more blood on its hands than any army of crusaders. Blaming religion for the bad acts of bad men who happen to believe in God is just nonsensical and doesn't disprove God's existence.
For example an atheist might say that since Franco believed in God and Franco did bad things all people who believe in God do bad things, therefore religion is the source of all the problems in the world today. However, if someone made the argument that Hitler was a monster(true) and Hitler was a vegetarian(also true) then vegetarianism is evil because Hitler was evil, they would be laughed out of the room. That is essentially the logical arguments that atheists set forth, and more often than not it's their best effort.
The big bang doesn't disprove God, the theory of evolution doesn't disprove God. Atheist might have turned the theory of evolution into a Godless Genesis story, but it doesn't disprove God's existence. The new atheists don't have any new arguments, they are just regurgitating the old ones.
