It may be a bit early to make predictions. But if one looks at the polls today, and figuring no major gaffes, the final presidential election looks to be Hillary Clinton versus Rudy Giuliani. But there’s more to this election than meets the eye.
There’s no doubt that many issues are extremely important. But the one overriding issue that should sway most votes is where the candidates come down on “life”. In particular, who would they nominate to the Supreme Court, which would likely need two SC nominations during their tenure.
No election rides on a single issue, but if one issue could make or break a nominee, “life” is the one that would. So the possible overturn of Roe vs Wade is not the only issue, but likely the most important in this election.
To overturn Roe has much relevance to the issue of “life”, and it turns out the president has most of the power in deciding who gets nominated. Three national polls(Newsweek, ABC/Washington Post, and Rasmussen) on 11/1 has Giuliani with ~13 point Republican lead. Those same three polls had Clinton with a ~22 point Democrat lead. Giuliani is not considered pro-life, but insists he will nominate a judge along the lines of a ‘Thomas’ or a ‘Scalia’(pro-life models).
Hillary is an entirely different animal.
Actually in mid May, Hillary criticized Republicans for trying to erode access to birth control for women. From a mass e-mail from her re-election campaign: “There’s a quiet war going on in America—against the most basic rights of Americans to make their own personal decisions about family planning.”
On 1/22/04, she gave the keynote address at the NARAL dinner commemorating Roe’s 31st anniversary. In it, she described pro-lifers as plotting behind closed doors to plan the quiet overthrow of America’s greatest right: the right to an abortion. (A right that was not given by the Declaration, nor the Constitution.) In her words she stated, “Slowly, methodically, quietly, they have begun chipping away at the reproductive rights of women. And if those rights fall, other rights will follow.”
The speech got worse. She discussed how federal tax dollars must be used for abortions. She continued with how pro-lifers were seeking to end “all rights of privacy”, and allegedly being opposed to any science and progress. Her whole speech ended with her words, “Our rights are at stake! Our freedom is at stake! Our way of life is at stake! Let’s wake up America!
Hillary is nowhere near pro-life. And if bets are laid down and she is president in 2008, she will make no ‘strict-constructionist’ SC justice appointment. And she will make no appointment of a justice that is pro-life---guaranteed.
Now a new poll(Los Angeles Times) has shown that the US public is continuing to move towards the pro-life position(White/ LifeSiteNews). It showed that 50% of the respondents(1,209 American adults) thought that abortion should be outlawed, but only 44% thought that it should remain legal. This is all part of a distinct trend in the last ten years in favor of legal rights for the unborn.
We may see telltale signs that humanity has degraded to a point of no-return during this election. We may even see upheaval such as we’ve never seen before. Considering the even split on this issue, and each side really has no middle ground or compromised position, fully one half of the electorate is not likely going to be content at all with the outcome.
In the words of many(including Anne Rice/author), “unborn human life is sacred”. It’s definitely true that global warming, taxes, government supplied healthcare, etc., etc…may be all important issues with a particular hierarchy all their own. Some might even be very important, but they are not sacred.
And as Dr. Paul Kengor(author) stated, “…there has never been a presidential candidate in all of American history---ever---as uncompromising and strident on the abortion issue than Hillary Clinton.”
