Taking the Bull by the Horns
November 12, 2007 01:57 PM EST

We've all heard the expression, "Taking the bull by the horns." This usually represents facing a challenge, making a change and or getting over a certain animosity. Well, what do you do when YOU are the bull? This is a question that I was personally facing and I was reinforcing the notion that it's scary!

Many of us get to a point in life were we do the "retrospect" thing. Some call it mid life crisis or re-evaluation of ones life. We almost always have regrets or dissatisfactions about something or a particular event or choice that we made that was a bad thing. For me well, I have a laundry list of things I wish I could do over. They are so many that I truly am the bull. How do I take myself by the horns?

Recently, I have been meeting people who are successful and wealthy, very wealthy. I am starting an e-commerce business and we have regular meetings, guest speakers and people from all back grounds gathering to support one another and learn new ideas or get the latest information. One common experience that occurs at each of these meetings is the "wealthy people" address the crowd.

At first I had the normal negative, distrustful, you gotta be kidding kind of reaction! I have gone to several such events and realized that the pep talk, motivational speaking, up lifting, encouraging and focused mentoring (notice it's mentoring now) was all being done by the wealthy people. I began to notice too, that they lived it. This was who these people are. These "wealthy people" were not simply stirring the crowd, they each were celebrating their respective lives with the crowd.

I soon became awestruck at how the wealthy people approached life. They all (so far) are undefeated. They are a different sort of BULL. These folks don't grab the bull by the horn...they grab life and create a ride! Everyone of them, so far have this common attribute amongst themselves. The ride they have created is SUCCESS! These people live according to how they want to, imagine that! They do what it takes to accomplish how they want to live....this concept was never taught to me! I have been trying to survive!

Well, now I have to take the bull by the horns (remember, that's me) and change, or do I? What if I just decide how I want to live and then do what it takes to accomplish this? What if instead of re-evaluating, retrospecting the past or beating myself up because of how I have lived, I just decide to go to these meetings, be around these people and put a different thought process into play?

Well, I am doing the latter. These wealthy people are now friends of mine and my fear an animosity is giving way to encouragement and optimism. The past mistakes eventually brought me to this junction in life. I only, really have one regret and that is that I took the long way. Nevertheless, life experience is a good qualifier for just about anything!

We all have said at one time or another, "Life is difficult, not fare at times and often very discouraging." If someone had of asked me years ago, what kind of life do you want to have, I would have said, "I don't know!" I was asked instead (Like most of us), "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Well, for me the answer was always easy, I was going to be a Dad! Being a dad has been the hardest thing I have ever done, the most difficult challenge I have known! Not to mention the fact that, I have been married the whole time....double whammy!

I guess, as some one recently said, (Thanks Brad Wolgamott) "That when life gets overwhelming take the very next MOMENT and enjoy it, capture it, be grateful and thankful that this particular moment is all you really have to work with! If given another moment to experience this amazing gift called life, in that moment, make a positive decision!" Good advice, good friend and good timing...

I am ready to live the way I want to. What I have to do along with everyone else in my position is make the next moment a positive one. I don't have to grab anything. I just have to continue to change the way I think about what I want and then do what it takes to have it! That in and of itself breeds success. Nothing scary about it....it's a choice!
