Support Our Troops? We'll See
November 13, 2007 01:00 PM EST

I saw something the other day, something that struck me as being contradictory. A car had two bumper stickers on it. The first said "Had Enough? Vote Democratic", and right below it was a yellow ribbon that said "Support our troops." Now, I'm not saying that a democrat can't be a patriot, but most patriotic democrats just haven't gotten around to changing their party affiliation yet.

"Support our troops" has become something of a mantra to prove that you are a patriotic American. Many on the left say they support our troops, they might even wear a flag lapel pin, all in an effort to show that they have shed their Vietnam era contempt for those that wear the uniform. Yet their support for our troops vanishes when it goes beyond the rhetorical. After all how can you claim that you support the troops when you are against the victory that they are fighting, and dying, for?

How can you claim that you support the troops, and at the same time claim that the best way to support the troops is to cut and run? When movies are made, and articles written, about the barbarism of the American soldier, how can one claim to support the troops while at the same time believing the articles and the movies? The New Republic eagerly tried to have the soldiers depicted as cruel, casual, killers. Robert Redford, and other Hollywood hacks, desperately want the American people to believe that the American soldiers are no better than the terrorists they fight.

Now most Americans, even most Americans who make the mistake of voting for democrats, are not in the same category of the left wing blogs, liberal magazines, and left wing film makers. Yet the democratic politicians usually are. The American who says he supports the troops, and wants the democratic party to run Washington are in favor of two contradictory things. The Democrats in congress clearly don't support the troops, and the rank and file members who do are a rapidly shrinking in numbers. The Democrats have compared them to pol pots killers, they claim that they are very much like Genghis Khan's hordes, that they are rapists, and thrill killers. While atrocities happen in any war, these charges are not representative of the vast majority of Americans. The Americans who defend us, and keep our freedoms intact.

If we say that we support the troops, let's really support them. Let's support their fight, and the victory they are going to achieve.
