Now it is nice that the "Girl from Qati", as she is known in Saudi Arabia was spared ninety lashes and prison time, and it is good that the scum who attacked her got their prison sentences increased. But it is a sign that there is something wrong with arab culture when the victim is threatened with punishment, and their religion sanctions such punishment.
The girl from Qati was spared because of international pressure on the Saudi government, it's highly unlikely that King Abdullah was really sympathetic to the victims plight, or hostile to the Islamist judges who sentenced her to such a cruel punishment.
Like most Islamic governments who implement Sharia law, they are happy to back down when the international community is looking on, provided they get something for their kindness. One can only wonder what Saudi Arabia got for letting a girl who never should have been charged with a crime off the hook.
Is it any wonder that the Islamic world, especially the Arab world, lags so far behind? Kemal Mustafa (Ataturk) said that a country could not go forward if half of the population were being left behind. Not only does most of the Islamic world leave half its population behind, they consider it their righteous duty to do so. (of course this does not apply to all countries. Tunisia, does not have the misogyny that effects most Islamic countries. Turkey, for now, can also be classified with Tunisia, but if Erdogan has his way that will change.)
It's just a symptom of the overall sickness of the Islamic world that the victim is as equally guilty as the criminal. And you have millions of Muslims who want to take this even further, they believe that Sharia law is not strong enough. They dream of a restoration of their medieval caliphate which would be a world where not only would rape victims be punished for being with their rapist, women convicted of adultery would be stoned to death, non Muslims would have to live as second class citizens, paying tribute just to have their basic human rights to freedom of religion.
I don't know what's scarier, the Taliban(and others like them) who think such a society is a good thing, or the people in the west who insist that the terrorist ilk who want such a world(preferably backed up by nuclear weapons) are not a real threat. Can anyone honestly say that Afghanistan would be better off under the Taliban, or threat we were wrong to remove them from power? Or that Iraq would be better off under the Baathists or under Al-Qaida?
Certain politicians, ok, I'm talking about the Democrats, don't think about Islamic tyranny and terrorism. They just don't think of it as a real threat to the United States. But it is a real threat, not just to the United States but to any country whether they fight back or not.
The girl from Qati might have been pardoned, but if the Islamic fanatics have their way there will be plenty of people, not just women, who will live in terror. The country needs to remember that. We might not be able to turn the Islamic world into the Garden of Eden, that doesn't mean should give up. A girl from Qati was spared a brutal sentence, millions of people who have to live under Islamic terror won't get that pardon.
