Let's be honest, Huckabee's win in Iowa sends a bad signal. Should he win the nomination he will destroy the conservative coalition and set the conservative movement back 30 years.
Huckabee isn't much of a conservative. He's a right wing populist in the mold of a Pat Buchanan. The GOP has thrived by being the party that was friendly to religious people and the values they stood for. They were able to achieve success by uniting conservative Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons, and Jews together around a common cause, but without getting into the specifics of theology. Work towards a conservative vision, leave the Bible debates to the churches.
Huckabee, it seems, is working overtime to change what the GOP is. One gets the sense that under Huckabee leadership non evangelicals need not apply. His preaching could turn off conservative Catholics who have been a main group within the GOP electorate for decades, and his overt bigotry towards Mormons could cost the GOP heavily Mormon states, such as Idaho and Utah, should Huckabee win the nomination.
Then there is his barely disguised contempt for economic conservatives. Huckabees brand of economic populism is a recipe for disaster. The more barriers to trade he puts up, the less trade we will have. The less trade we have the less work people will get. How's that good for anyone? Then, of course, there are the tax hikes he supported time and time again when he was governor of Arkansas. Not to mention the massive tax hike he's supporting now. Just call a stupid idea the fair tax and you can raise taxes through the roof, and convince people that you're doing them a favor.
Huckabee favors a soft stance on illegal immigration. Like President Bush, he considers it unchristian to enforce the immigration laws of this country. I suppose when we're overrun with 50 million illegals and English becomes a second language he'll be happy.
Let's not forget his foreign policy, or lack of one to be more precise. Is this a man anyone should trust to defend America? What will he do when Iran goes nuclear? Huckabee wasn't really fit to be governor of Arkansas, he's certainly not fit to be President.
On the Democratic side it's more interesting. While it was fun wathcing Hillary finish third, it's not as if the choice of Barak Obama was a good one. I don't think Obama is nearly as dangerous and corrupt as Hillary is, but aside from Dennis Kucinich, he's the most left wing candidate in the party.
If Obama gets to take the oath of office he has vowed to withdraw all troops out of Iraq. I guess there's nothing like surrendering when victory is in hand. Aside from talking about hope he really hasn't talked about anything at all.
One expects weird decisions from the Democrats, but the GOP won't get anywhere with Huckabee. We win when we run as conservatives. When we're strong on defense, in favor of cutting taxes, and stand up for the moral traditions of our country the GOP does well. Aside from the last one Huckabee doesn't stand for anything that could remotely be called conservative.
Republicans should remember that and nominate someone else.
