Never in recorded history have so many polls and pundits been wrong. In every election there are both pollsters and strategists plotting the course of each candidate. In every election there are winners and losers. By definition some strategists and pollsters are wrong. This cycle is a perfect example almost everyone being wrong.
Here we after Super Tuesday and everyone is surprised. McCain sweeps and is practically a shoo-in. A lot of people are threatening to sit out the election. If you like Hillary or Obama sitting out the election is the right thing to do. However the rest of us may not be enamored with McCain but we don’t want to give the election to either Hillary or Obama. The Democrat primary is still in play.
One of the first things that I learned when becoming involved in politics started is that people who run for office have big egos. No they have huge gigantic egos. Often these egos overrule common sense. All of the common sense logical thinking go out the window because winning becomes an obsession. Considering unintended consequences is ignored.
The division of conservative voters between Romney and Huckabee assured the election of John McCain. Now the conservatives are talking about staying home in droves come November. I am a conservative myself favoring Thompson, Hunter, and Romney. I will not stay home and pout: this election is too important. As much as I am not fond of John McCain he is better than either Hillary or Obama. It might turn out to be Hillary and Obama or vice versa. In either case the thought of what they will do to the military or the justice system is frightening. Taxes will go through the roof and the dollar will further devaluate. National health care will become socialized like England and Canada.
The ego problem has no solution. Politicians by definition have huge egos; why else would anyone run for office. The rest of the world must always put up with egotistical leaders elected or not. We need to use the egos to our advantage. It is much like the work environment we have many bosses and co workers that we must deal with to get a job done. Do we have to like it? Of course not, we must play the hand we are dealt.
Does this mean we must abandon our principles? I have been a conservative all of my life. That has not changed. We do not have to like or emulate McCain. Does this mean we must keep our views to ourselves? Again the answer is a resounding no. Does this mean the system is flawed? Of course it is flawed it was designed by human beings.
Is there is any one thing to be learned from this election cycle? Moving the primaries up so far from the general elections only complicates the process. The primaries were too far ahead of the general election. The primaries will be over in a few weeks. Are we ready for nine more months of political ads and speeches?
