Election 2008: A Forrest Gump Thing
February 16, 2008 11:00 AM EST

Since October 2007, three of my articles about Election 2008 have been published here.

My first article described Election 2008 as something similar to "Theater of the Absurd." My second article downgraded Election 2008 to a game of "Trivial Pursuit." And my third article again downgraded Election 2008 into an ongoing soap opera like "As The World Turns."

This article brings still another downgrade. This time, Election 2008 has hitanother new low—down to Forrest Gump discourse.

Forrest Gump was both a character in a novel and in a movie years later. He’s best remembered for saying, "stupid is as stupid does." In the movie, Forrest was placid and naive.

His school principal told his mom that he had an I-Q of only 75. Nevertheless, his mom told Forrest, "Don’t let anybody tell you they’re better than you. If God intended everybody to be the same, he’d have given us all bracelets for our legs."

Does that sound like intelligent Election 2008 chatter?

It’s easy to transition from that quote by Forest Gump’s mom to Election 2008.

Why is this 2008 Election so pathetic? The political parties, the candidates, the media, and the voters all share part of the blame.

The political parties have become weaker. At one time, party bosses reigned supreme with unquestioned authority. The parties had clearly defined platforms. People could understand the differences between the parties.

But no longer!

Now, both the Republican and Democrat parties have become useless at election time. It’s really time for a party realignment. Both major parties should go out of business and into the history books.

Candidates have taken the dominant role now. But in Election 2008, they’ve not communicated clearly and simply, as both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did in previous elections.

Sound bites and platitudes now substitute for clarity and substance. After all, candidates can’t afford to offend anyone with reality or specifics.

Neither Presidential candidates nor members of Congress seem to know anything about the U.S. Constitution and the limited powers the people gave to the Federal Government--as well as the powers the people have devolved to the states.

How can anyone do a good job if he or she does not have and understand the job description?

The traditonal media have turned Election 2008 into empty entertainment. The best reporting comes from talk radio and the Internet news sources. Even worse, many American people don’t understand these things, either.

Voters have three major remaining Presidental candidates.

Hillary Clinton makes no bones about it. She’s totally liberal and a proud cheerleader for socialized medicine. Her temperment seems unstable, especially when she gets angry.

Barack Obama seems like a nice young man. Yet, I have no idea what he stands for. And I don’t know if he’s a Muslim or a Christian—or both.

He claims to have a vision, but nobody knows what it is yet. John McCain is deeply troubling to me. He acts liberal and talks as if he were a conservative. He’s sarcastic and vituperative. He—like Hillary—has a nitroglycerine personality, able to erupt quickly.

All three candidates are not specific about one vexing aspect of NeoCon belief.

Presidents Reagan and both Presidents Bush believed and acted on this doctrine—that the USA is the only superpower and, as a result, it must serve as the world’s policeman.

This doctrine led to ouster of Saddam Hussein because George Bush thoughtSaddam was playing with weapons of mass distruction. So the USA intervened, ousted Saddam, and got mired down in a long, futile, costly, pointless religious war.

This part of NeoCon doctrine is absurd. I prefer Henry Kissinger’s alternative, using hegemony with nations at odds with each other. Kissinger practiced "tilting toward" one of the nations, treating it very well.

"Tilting toward" is a marvelous Machiavellian method of diplomatic manipulation for positive, bloodless outcomes.

As a result of "tilting toward," the other nation would become jealous and modify its odious positions and behaviours to please the United States.

To summarize, its imperative that Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul stay on the ballot, given the weakness of the three leading candidates. Huckabee is climbing in the polls. Hopefully, McCain will self-destruct soon.

As a Libertarian, my choice clearly is for Ron Paul as President. The media, using Soviet style tactics, treat Ron Paul like a "non-person." To them, he doesn’t exist.
