McCain Appeases Ahmadinejad
March 04, 2008 12:00 PM EST

Question: When did Senator John McCain become Neville Chamberlain on Iran? Neville Chamberlain was the British Prime Minister in the 1930's who appeased Adolph Hitler and encouraged Nazi aggression in Europe.

Answer: Senator McCain became Neville Chamberlain this week when he rubberstamped President Bush’s decision to endorse the visit to Baghdad of Iran’s Nazi president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Senator McCain has made a serious political blunder by supporting President Bush’s approval of the Ahmadinejad visit. However, one avenue is open for Senator McCain to recoup. Senator McCain must call on General Petreaus to present a detailed briefing to the US press this week on three issues -- Ahmadinejad’s ties to Iran’s Nazi Brownshirt force called the Revolutionary Guards (the IRGC); the role of the IRGC in planning and executing terrorist attacks on US forces in Iraq; and, finally, the role of the IRGC in carrying out the assassinations of rival political leaders in Iraq.

We can be confident that the Petreaus briefing establish that Ahmadinejad is one of Iran’s most prominent terrorists. Moreover, a review of his career will likely uncover his personal role in acts of terrorism going back twenty years or more, including the political assassinations of Iranian communists in the 1970's and a possible Ahmadinejad role in seizing the US embassy and taking hostages in Iran in 1979.

To put it another way, if Senator McCain does not consider Ahmadinejad a terrorist, then no Iranian is a terrorist.

Once Ahmadinejad’s personal involvement in terrorism has been established on the record, Senator McCain should call upon President Bush to bring Ahmadinejad to justice. An essential first step is for the US is to make clear that until Ahmadinejad proves the US evidence is false, the US will not issue a visa for Ahmadinejad to visit the United States for any purpose. In addition, the USG will then obtain a commitment from Iraq’s government to deny Ahmadinejad a visa.

Moreover, the US should take the same stance of visa denial to former Iranian president Rafsanjani. The Argentine Government has evidence of Rafsanjani's personal role in directing Hezbollah terrorism in Buenos Aires in 1995 that killed dozens of people. Argentina's president Kirchener has caalled upon Ahmadinejad to cooperate with her investigation. Ahmadinejad refuses to cooperate.

Last week Ahmadinejad made a speech saying that Iran has become the global superpower. Congratulations, Iran! Why not take this opportunity of becoming number one to clear the record of any association with terrorism for both Ahmadinejad and Rafsanjani. You can find Senator McCain on the campaign trail.
