Al Gore once said he was the model for Erich Segal's "Love Story," a famous line of which was the completely incorrect "Love means never having to say you're sorry."

Much of liberalism consists of finding creative ways to allow people to shirk the responsibility for their own actions (taking out shaky loans, refusing to study when in school, committing robberies, using drugs, engaging in unsafe sex, sharing needles, and on and on and on). In the modern political arena the slogan could be "Being a Democrat means never having to say you're sorry." Right now a big problem for the Democrats is how to avoid responsibility for the Michigan and Florida primary decision by the DNC.

The DNC wants to avoid the responsibility for deciding that the Michigan and Florida votes wouldn't count if those states persisted in disobeying the DNC rules. The state Democratic Party leaders want to avoid the responsibility for their decisioin to move their primaries up in the calendar. And of course, in classic Democratic fashion, they want somebody else to pay for it.

The most creative excuse I heard came just a few minutes ago when a Democratic strategist blamed the entire problem on the Republican Party! The logic of that escaped me, but it's typical.

If people had to suffer the consequences of their own actions, it just might teach them a lesson. When the government looks for ways to absolve people of responsibility, it only encourages more irresponsibility and it encourages rule-breaking if there are no penalties for such. Do you think, at the next primary, that the state party committees will be more inclined to ignore the rules if they get away with it this time?
