Silivio Berlusconi has just won a third term as Prime Minister in Italy. This not only brings a strong pro American politician back into office, the Italian voters swept the left from office. For the first time since World War Two the Communists don't have a seat in either the Senate or the Chamber of Deputies. The Socialists are also on the outside looking in.
Italy is not alone in this. France and Germany now have conservative, pro American, governments. Their governments replaces governments that made anti Americanims conrnerstones of their policy. Denmark, for the first time ever has a conservative government that was able to get reelected. In the UK polls show that the Tories are poised to come back to power after more than a decade of Labor rule.
So how did this happen? There are two explanations for this. One is that there aren't as many anti American activists in Europe, that anti Americanism goes up and down with events around the world. Secondly, and more likely, is that they don't give America much thought when they go to cast their ballot, local and national concerns are at the forefront. As they should be. Thediehard anti Americans always vote left(even in America) the fact that they aren'tsweeping elections across Europe shows that most Europeans aren't committed to hating America and have other concerns.
In fact as much as they like to see us asthe reckless and dangerous cowboys out to ruin world peace, deep down they know they need us as much as they would be loath to admit it. Who will protect them from Iran, or from a nationalistic and assertive Russia? Europe no longer has the military strength to defend itself, nor does it have the willpower to even fightfor itsown survival so it needs to find someone who will do it for them, andas much as they like to make us out to be the villian they know were better than the Iranians or the Russians.
Unfortunately for Europe the election of conservative governments will not begin to solve all of their problems. These governments might be more friendly to the United States, and in the case of some governments like the Danish government, more willing to restrict immigration from Muslim countries it is not enough. The European birthrate is still too low, and there really isn't anything the government can do to change that, it is a symptom of greater cultural problems. These governments aren't willing or aren't able to rip out the socialist welfare states by the roots. So the greater problems of Europe remain.
Western Europe needs to import workers, but they are getting them from the wrong places from countries that don't respect the culture of Europe. Algierians in France, the Spanish bring in people from Morocco, the Germans bring in Turks, and the result is Militant Islam is on the rise. Immigrant populations refuse to assimilate, even more so than in the U.S. and the Islamictization of Europe in under way.
The election of conservative governments is a good start, but until they address the root causes it won't really matter. Let's hope for their sake, and ours, that they solve the real problems.
