I don't know if the Rev. Wrights views are common for black clergy, but it's not hard to see that they are common, and popular, with the American left. The more vitriolic and anti American he is the more the left loves him. The more racist, the more paranoid, and the more radical he is the more he is embraced.
It should not be difficult to see why the left loves him so much. Reverend Wright is in perfect lockstep with the American left. It's no shock that the party of traitors and calloborators thinks so highly of him. The left has, for the last 40 years or so, been committed to the idea that America is evil. It was conceived in evil, born in evil, and raised in evil. The only way, the left beileves, for America to be redeemed is to be cleansed by a revolution that will turn America into a radical left wing country. Now, such sentiments usually aren't uttered in public too much by the mainstream left, but then again Rev. Wright is hardly mainstream.
Reverend Wright believes that the 9-11 attacks were deserved. That's an opinion most on the left hold. They might not think they were judgement from God the way Wright does, but most university professors, left wing activists, and old radicals were quite happy when the saw the twin towers coming down, and the pentagon burning. Conspiracies and paranoia are common on the left because it is the only thing they have to explain the world around them. In their minds they are so good, wise, and benign, that the only reason America hasn't fully embraced their worldview is because of a conspiracy, or cabal, to keep them out of power. Hence the urban legends on the left. Such as the belief that the police kept black voters away from the polls in 2000. There are, of course, paranoids on the right but it's hard to say that they are as mainstream as their leftist counterparts.
For Wright, this paranoia centers on race. He is a black supremacist. In his mind the only way the African American population is failing is because of a conspiracy by inferior white races to keep them down. So in this fantasy the whites inventĀ AIDS to kill blacks, spread crack through inner cities to get blacks addicted , and so on. The Nazis had a similar propaganda. The Aryan superman was being held back by a conspiracy of Jews, who were somehow less then human. (this has always been funny to me. Because if jews were so inferior how were they able to hold down Aryan supermen, or in todays case Arabs? ) Wright peddles in blame and grievances and that the African American communities problems of broken families, poverty, crime and addiction are largely of their own making is a thought that never crosses his mind.
Wright is telling the left exactly what it wants to hear. That America is an evil place, filled with injustice, cruelty, barbarism, racism, sexism, and any other ism that is anathema to the civilized world. Rather than condemning countries where such things really exist as state policy, say Saudi Arabia, Iran, or North Korea, he unleashes his rage on the United States. A country so evil that it allowed him to amass a fortune from his ministry of blame America.
Some will try to dissmiss Wright as a fringe charachter, but the truth is that he is being mainstreamed. Bill Moyers did everthing but kiss Wrights hand during their "interview" and the NAACP and organization supposedly against racsim, invited, and gave a standing ovation to, an admitted racist who's speech was basically one long parody of non black people that engaged in the grossest stereotypes, for both whites and blacks. Imagine if at some conservative gathering a man got up in blackface and did impersonations of black people?
The American left is dangerous for America, and their enthusiastic embrace of Wright is only more evidence of that.
