Roberts a Good Choice?
July 26, 2005 04:41 PM EST

I have been waiting for a long while, as many have, to find out who President Bush would nominate for Supreme Court justice. This battle has been fought for a long time. I guess I could fairly say that this battle was going on even before the 2004 presidential election.

I can remember on several occasions radio hosts verbalizing their opinions about what the Supreme Court nominee would look like under either presidential candidate.

The battle still continues and may get worse as time marches on. I know that organizations lie Michael Moore's Move On.org and People for the American Way are disappointed in this particular nominee because of his past statements and views on abortion rights. Then again, that makes organizations and special interest groups, particularly but not entirely Christian, very happy. I know that National Right to Life is happy as well as the Family Research Council and people like Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family.

I personally don't really know what to think just yet. I did want a justice who would not legislate from the bench, cite foreign law to go by when making U.S. decisions, and someone who would take a stand for pro-life. That does not mean that Roe v. Wade will be overturned, but does mean that perhaps someday, individual states could make their own laws banning abortion. Mississippi is already there. Mississippi only has one abortion clinic left and when it's gone, that may be the end of it in that state. Mississippi is probably the most Biblically conservative state in the union. During the election in 2004, over 86 % of Mississippi voted to ban same sex marriage in that state. That's almost everyone and also was the highest percentage number to do so. If everyone registered would have voted, the toll would have been higher I suspect.

While I have taken alot of heat from columns like this, this is an opinion column and I feel that I have that right to express what went on in Mississippi and other states. I don't know how the media will perceive this nomination, though I speculate it will be negative. So far, I don't particularly have a decent enough opinion of Roberts to write much about him because I don't know alot about him. In the next few days, he will be mentioned on the news, but I personally prefer news like Cybercast News Service (www.cnsnews.com ), and World Net Daily( www.worldnetdaily.com ) as opposed to most mainstream sources. They just seem to me like they are more open and honest about what is going on. Agape Press is another one that is reliable and accurate.

For now I guess we will all just have to wait and see where this nomination goes and hope for the best. I feel that we are fighting an uphill battle though. This decision has not been made 3 hours and already there is opposition. It's almost as if the opposition was planning ahead just in case someone they disagreed with was picked. Then again, who knows what really goes on in Washington. I'll just keep out for now and let people make their own assumptions and opinions about nominations for the reasons they se fit.
