Trusting Bush, Verifying Harriet Miers
October 04, 2005 12:00 AM EST

President Bush nominated a never-married, childless, unknown lawyer to the U.S. Supreme Court. Just like Bush, The First, nominated David Souter. Souter has been a loser for our Constitutional Republic.

Yet, this other lawyer has been close to the President for years. Can she be trusted to be a strict constructionist Conservative? Bush promised justices in the ‘Scalia and Thomas’ mold. Conservatives are asked to just trust Bush.

The Bible says to not put your trust in man. So, what is the record of trust in deeds from President Bush, The Second? President Bush was:

• Right to pass a tax cut to improve the economy and create more opportunities.
• Right to counter-attack and depose the Taliban in Afghanistan. Right to keep fighting there with NATO allies at our side.
• Right to attack and depose dictator Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Hussein was a clear and present danger who would have to be removed sooner or later.
• Right to pursue a Six Nation Northwest Asia solution to North Korean nuclear threats.
• Right to nominate many conservatives to other judicial appointments.
• Wrong to delegate the War to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld experimented with warfare as he ignored the Army leadership’s professional advice on how to fight and how to occupy. Bush was loyal beyond forgivable fault to not listen to other advice or to know to do so. Bush was wrong to promote overblown expectations of Wilsonian rhetoric over idealism about Western Civilization’s democracy flowering in Muslim sands.
• Wrong to not defend our sovereign national border against an illegal immigrant invasion. Wrong to support an appeasing amnesty.
• Wrong to not veto uncontrolled spending by Congress.
• Wrong to not veto the phony Campaign Financing Reform and stop the suppression of First Amendment freedom.
• Wrong to expand national education spending with Sen. Teddy Kennedy’s co-authorship and make the Federal government impinge on state responsibilities – in the name of accountability.
• Wrong to support a civil rights-threatening Patriot Act, which will be terrible in the hands of Hillary.
• Wrong to appoint political patrons in positions where professionals are needed, like the Director of FEMA.
• Waiting to see if socialist Social Security is replaced with privatized accounts.
• Waiting to see if energy supplies are increased.
• Waiting to see if Chief Justice Roberts is the right Conservative for the Supreme Court.

Does this record warrant complete trust on something so important as a Supreme Court Justice? Or, as President Reagan warned about the Soviet Communists, should Conservatives ‘trust, but verify’?

Verification that Harriet Miers is a Conservative should go beyond the usual paper trail of public pronouncements and political donations. Find out how often she reads the Bible. Ask her church family.
One testimony on Marvin Olasky’s World Magazine web site is
“that Miers has been a member of Valley View Christian Church in Dallas for 25 years. One member calls it a "conservative evangelical church... in the vernacular, fundamentalist, but the media have used that word to tar us." Furthermore, on abortion, choosing his words carefully for an on-the-record statement, he says "her personal views are consistent with that of evangelical Christians."”
What can you tell when Liberal Senator Harry Reid supports Ms. Miers?
Ask her questions like:
• Is the Creator of our Rights in the Declaration of Independence the Judeo-Christian God of the Holy Bible?
• What is a Natural Law that is above the U.S. Constitution? Name a temporal law, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did in his ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail’, that should be broken by an individual - even though it is legal according to the legislature, executive and judiciary – because it violates Natural Law.
• How completely would you deconstruct ‘settled’ law when it is profoundly bad law – written by judges from the bench?
• Do you believe in imaginary rights in the Constitution? Where are the words in the Constitution creating the right to ‘privacy’ to abort babies and to commit sodomy?
• How do you prevent Government from seizing private property to increase the tax base since SCOTUS ruled so favorably last year?
• If Gov. Jeb Bush had followed the Florida Constitution and used his ‘supreme’ executive power to save the life of an innocent woman, convicted of nothing but being incapacitated, would you support Bush and the State Constitution or the angry Priest-King judges?

I’d rather verify Miers than just trust Bush.
