Her resume has been endlessley touted that she is right for the court. I'm still looking for the qualifications that are supposed to make her a good pick for the supreme court. Head of the Texas Bar Association?
Lawyer to President Bush? Fine, that says that she is a competent lawyer, it doesn't mean that she is fit to sit on the highest court in the country. Her assurances not withstanding.
There is a difference between being a lawyer and being on the Supreme Court, a big difference. As a lawyer you make arguments trying to convince a jury, or a judge. What makes a good lawyer is how well he does with his cases. By that standard former Senator Edwards was a good lawyer, but I wouldn't want him on the court. Now I admit that I am simplifying what lawyers do. There are lawyers that aren't trial lawyers and I'm sure there is more to it than winning over a jury. But all that aside and it is a very different world from a judge, especially a justice on the Supreme Court.
A judge is to interpret the law, the Supreme Court has to deal with questions of the constitution and their answers will shape this country for decades. That is why it is so important to have the right people on the court. Put the wrong people on the court and instead of making a decision on Affirmative Action we decide to wait 25 years and see if it is still needed.
Some tout Ms. Miers religion and her pro life views. So what? I go to church every week, and I'm pro life. That doesn't qualify me for the supreme court. It doesn't qualify her either. Important as abortion is there are other issues that we need to worry about.
The court is hearing the right to die case from Oregon. This is a case that will affect the 10th amendment and federalism. Will the court say it is a state issue or will it get the federal government involved? These are the questions the court must face and we need a nominee that can answer them.
Miers is not qualified for the highest court in the land. I voted for President Bush twice but "Trust me" just doesn't cut it. Her nomination should be withdrawn or the Senate should vote her down.
