Alito Right Pick for the Court
October 31, 2005 09:30 AM EST

Finally some good news out of Washington. Well, good news for people who actually care about this country anyway.

It seemed like everything was going wrong. First he nominated his personal attorney, who's sole bright spot on her resume was that she was head of the Texas Bar Association. When she finally did the right thing and withdrew her nomination, conservatives wondered does Bush get the message?

It appears that he does. Samuel Alito, an appeals court judge on the third circuit, and a solid conservative has been nominated to replace the outgoing Sandra Day O'Connor. Finally, we all think to ourselves, he gets it. Conservatives have stood by him through medicare drug benefits, the biggest expansion of the welfare state since LBJ, we have allowed wasteful pork spending to increase at a rate that we would never have tolerated under Clinton, and we have allowed the situation on the Mexican border to worsen so that it has become a national crisis. Some are willing to pay that price so long as we are able to reshape the court.

And it looks like the conservatives will finally get that chance. Alito is a staunch conservative, there is no questioning that. The only question is which democrat will run to the senate floor first and make apocalyptic predictions about the fate of the country. Harry Reid has already claimed he might be too radical.Which probably means that he actually understands the constitution. I'm sure that Senator Kennedy will claim that the world in which Judge Alito sits on the court will be one of segregated lunch counters and back alley abortions. After all that is his modu operandi when it comes to a judge that doesn't think the EU is the best place to find inspiration to the American legal system.

This is what conservatives have wanted. A knock down grag out fight with the left over the court. The left, once again, gets to show itself as Americas Perter Pan party a bunch of people that never grew up. This means that the left wingers get to spend their time with a filibuster that makes them look like a bunch of spoiled brats throwing a temper tantrum. Maybe this time the GOP will have the guts to kill the filibuster, which I'm sure the left wing interests groups are demanding, and put a competent jurist on the court.
