In 1977 I wrote what was called the Pro-Life Initiative of California and I along with California State Assemblyman Alister McAlister, California State Senator Mike Antonovich, Stephen T. Bentley of California State University, Sacramento, United Students for Life, became proponents of that initiative. The purpose of the initiative was to outlaw state funding of abortion, and we, on a budget of less than ten thousand dollars in a campaign made up almost exclusively of college students from every county and city in the state collected over 300,000 signatures to place the initiative on the ballot.
Unfortunately, in the end some came to the conclusion that we did not have the financial ability to place that measure on the ballot and prevail; and so at the last minute, 10 months of effort was abandoned.
Shortly after that I was content to leave California for good, a state that in my opinion had placed unborn children on a sacrificial pedestal for slaughter in the name of convenience and momentary pleasure.
Over the years I had heard rumors that California was becoming more and more conservative and pro-life, predicated to a certain degree on the growth of the Hispanic population there, a population which tends to be socially conservative. On Tuesday, win or loose, the evidence of California's metamorphism will be seen in the "Yes" vote for Prop. 73, which would make it the law that a parent would be notified before an abortionist could operate on that parent’s child for the purpose of killing the parent’s grandchild.
California has served as the spearhead of abortion rights movement in America, and on Tuesday November 8th we will learn if that spearhead has dulled or shattered, either way, it is a major win for the American pro-life movement, a win I have been waiting nearly 30 years to see.
