Senator John McCain is both a legitimate war hero and a legitimate moron. He has made an issue out of our country's possible use of torture and in the process forced the President into a corner. As a pro-military conservative I respect the service that Senator McCain, his father and his grandfather provided to our country, all three were awesome patriots and John McCain still is, but not all patriots are brilliant or display common sense, and John McCain is proof of that.
Senator McCain was tortured at the hands of the North Vietnamese and predicated on that unique experience he has been an outspoken critic of this country's use of torture. Someone needs to remind the Senator that the North Vietnamese were bad guys and we are good guys. The North Vietnamese, like the North Koreans in the Korean War and the Japanese in World War II, tortured our soldiers, and did so long after they could obtain any useful information from them. There is a difference between torturing soldiers, which I believe is wrong and torturing terrorists who are targeting and implementing attacks on civilians and would do so with weapons of mass destruction.
Senator McCain is trying to outlaw the use of torture in this country, a proposed law that makes no exception for imminent danger. Under a law that Senator McCain proposed our CIA would not be permitted to torture bin Laden, to find a ticking nuclear bomb he caused to be placed under one of our major cities. Our Bill of Rights exists to protect Americans not foreign terrorists. For most of the 20th Century the McCain's protected America, wouldn't be a shame if a law with Senator McCain's name on it helped a terrorist execute a major attack against America.
