This is the second installment of “Is It Christian?” an interview with Greek Orthodox priest, Father Johannes L. Jacobse. Monday, June 26, 2006 09:07:35 AM
What do Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, talk-radio superstar Rush Limbaugh, and the creators and cast of the hit series "24" have in common? They were all part of a presentation last week by the Heritage Foundation. Sunday, May 14, 2006 10:34:34 AM
Almost a month ago I, Helen, had surgery to totally replace my left knee. My surgery was on a Monday and on Wednesday I took a few steps - my way of landing on an aircraft carrier and declaring the major battle over. I was released that afternoon and I'm home now, with Peter taking care of me, and we've plenty of time, as well as continual painful reminders, to think about this event in our lives. This time it was a root canal - totally unexpected pain - but it had to be taken care of. Two days ago it was food freezing instead of chilling in the refrigerator. Again totally unexpected, but it had to be taken care of. Then the CD player decided to choke itself on the disks and, although not an emergency or painful, it was just another broken item that had to be dealt with. Wednesday, April 12, 2006 09:01:21 AM
Did you ever wonder what it would be like if we all had to personally pay for each child born out of wedlock? Let's take a for-instance. We used to live in a small condominium. Saturday, March 04, 2006 12:01:22 PM
"Guns kill people" was what the makers of this movie kept hammering into our minds. In the opening scene, our viewpoint is manufactured into a bullet. Then, from a bullet's-eye-view, we take a voyage overseas, get smuggled across a border by dark-skinned ne'er-do-wells, loaded into an assault rifle and aimed at a young, innocent boy. Following is the first installment of Is It Christian, an interview with Greek Orthodox priest Father Johannes L. Jacobse. Sunday, December 11, 2005 12:14:32 AM
We recently received one of those emails telling us that "it's Friendship Month!" It contained a moralistic story about being kind to a stranger who turns out to be a famous person. Sunday, May 29, 2005 07:44:00 AM
In our last article entitled "Why Can’t We Reform our Criminals" "http://peterandhelenevans.com/articles-farabee.html", we talked about the upsurge of recidivism since the therapeutic mentality took over the task of transitioning criminals back into society. According to this group, it’s parents who didn’t attend every single soccer game, parents who didn’t tolerate their children’s individuality and let them be themselves, or in other words; parents who didn’t grant the kids’ every wish who are to blame. Plus, of course, another major factor is "Society" in general. We, as a society, just didn’t care enough, weren’t tolerant enough, and expected too much. Monday, April 18, 2005 05:51:00 AM
It’s been a few weeks since our nation was immersed in the emotional drama surrounding the end of Terri Shiavo’s life. We literally had to face death; not just hers, but the prospect of our own. The media eye has moved on now, and emotions have subsided somewhat, but our passion about the issues raised by Ms Shiavo’s final agony should remain aflame. We must not allow being euthanized to be euphemized. Saturday, March 12, 2005 03:01:54 PM
This month at the American Enterprise Institute, David Farabee, a research psychologist at the University of California - Los Angeles and the Director of the Integrated Substance Abuse Program Juvenile Justice Research Group, presented his monograph, "Re-Thinking Rehabilitation: Why Can’t we Reform Our Criminals?" For those of you who just worry about crime and are not dealing first hand with this issue, here are what might be some surprising statistics: Thursday, February 10, 2005 06:28:31 AM
Massad Ayoob is arguably one of the most lethal men around, in fact he even trains others in the use of deadly force. Many people cannot distinguish the difference between ’dangerous’ and ’lethal.’ When they hear that someone is an expert in handgun combat, urban rifle, knife/counter-knife, close-quarters battle and stressfire shotgun, they automatically think of someone to be feared. However, after reading the following we believe you’ll recognize a good guy who balances lethal force and compassion. Only the bad guys need fear him. Monday, January 31, 2005 04:43:18 AM
On Friday, January 28th, Michael Crichton, MD spoke at the American Enterprise Institute on Science Policy in the 21st Century. His latest book, "State of Fear" is the product of three years of examining environmental research, activism and policy. Dr. Crichton, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, as well as being a best selling author with more than 100 million copies sold worldwide, addressed the audience as an informed citizen concerned with how politicized research results in distorted conclusions and misguided government policy. (During the Q&A Crichton was asked by a wag if his talk was a partisan tool for the Bush administration. He replied that he "follows the data" and if his conclusions are the same as those of the Bush administration then it’s a coincidence.) Wednesday, January 05, 2005 10:06:25 PM
by Peter and Helen Evans Recently we were speculating why there are so many welfare recipients in cities versus small towns or rural areas. We know the standard reason why the un-employed migrate to the city is, "that’s where the jobs are." However, we think there is another reason. It’s where the ’anonymity’ is. By that we mean that non-judgmental programs have been instituted based on the assumption that ’problems’ exist and the programs are there to accommodate them. We saw a big sign here proclaiming that the organization was "fulfilling needs not yet imagined." Tuesday, December 28, 2004 04:26:44 AM
by Peter and Helen Evans New Year’s is traditionally the time that we resolve to make changes that will improve our lives. We’re going to suggest a resolution that will not help you lose 20 pounds, stop smoking or help you remember birthdays and anniversaries. This resolution will instead save the American taxpayers billions of dollars. To do this you must resolve to write to your representatives in federal government demanding that the United States get out of the United Nations and the United Nations get out of the United States. Do this now and continue to goad them every month, as well as support any efforts that will limit the power of the United Nations. Thursday, December 16, 2004 11:05:00 AM
by Peter and Helen Evans Since taking our handgun safety class and qualifying for concealed-carry permits, we have had several opportunities to talk with people about guns. Not formal presentations; just shooting the breeze, so to speak. In our last article (The Truth About Guns, Part 2), we speculated about the deep seated fears many harbor about guns. In this column we’re going to talk about the response from a few "ordinary people" who aren’t necessarily pro- or anti-gun, they just don’t think about the subject much. As a result, they tend to rely on an un-examined belief that’s invariably associated with guns. It’s seldom directly articulated but you can hear it implied in their tone of voice when they say "Oh, you like guns" as though they were saying, "Oh, you eat babies for lunch." by Peter and Helen Evans The so-called ’debate’ over gun control would be funny if its implications weren’t so serious. They’re both speaking the same language, but they’re talking about two very different worlds. As a result, neither side really understands what the other side is talking about. The difference between the two world-views was illustrated by something that came up in a handgun safety class that we recently attended. Tuesday, December 14, 2004 07:02:55 PM
by Peter and Helen Evans We recently took the safety course required to obtain a "concealed-carry" permit for a handgun. As residents of the District of Columbia we cannot even legally own a bullet without registering it, and handguns are completely illegal. Yet, since we believe in the Second Amendment, we wanted to have first hand facts. Some general facts about those who carry guns: |
