I have received scores of letters and emails expressing the same feelings of discouragement. "What can we do?" people ask. They express frustration with their congressmen and senators being non-responsive to their letters and phone calls. They are convinced contacting the White House is a complete waste of time-and they are right. And for the most part, their pastors are no help, either. With almost complete unanimity, the two major parties are walking in lock-step in their support for President Bush's efforts to merge the United States into a trilateral hemispheric government with Mexico and Canada. In addition, for the most part, the major media (including Fox News) remains virtually silent on the subject. Furthermore, most every major Christian leader remains silent also. Yes, Martha, America is on the verge of losing its national sovereignty and independence, and the vast majority of our country's leaders (of any kind) sit mute and unmoved! I was inspired (but not impressed with some of the language used) by a recent article written by Allan Uthman (http://buffalobeast.com/99/policestate.htm). It never ceases to amaze me how politicians play the God-card every election cycle. "Vote for me, I teach a Sunday School class." "Vote for me, I am a member of such-and-such church." "Vote for me, I am a conservative Christian." Ad infinitum. Ad nauseam. Unfortunately, these tactics work! Since then, the GOP has not failed my expectations. George W. Bush was elected President of the United States largely on the strength of the image that he is a practicing Christian, a man of integrity and honesty, and a man who can be trusted. More than three decades as a senior pastor leads me to shout the question, "What in the world has happened to America's parents?" Have they gone mad, or do they just not care anymore? The signs suggest something is seriously amiss inside America's homes. As a pastor, I see this on a daily basis. It seems that, for the most part, today's parents have little or no control over their children. Even in our churches, by the time a child reaches the ripe old age of two or three, he or she is out of control! I mean totally out of control! It should be painfully obvious to most all of us that our federal government has no intention of stopping or even reducing illegal immigration. It seems all too clear that we have a president and congress that are willing to allow foreign lawbreakers to invade our country and live off taxpayer welfare with total impunity. While American troops are hunkered down in "safe zones" in Iraq trying to stay out of an escalating civil war, our government seems oblivious to a growing threat of civil war right here in the United States. As anyone can see, millions of illegal aliens living here are becoming more vocal, more demonstrative, more belligerent, and more violence-prone by the day. Ever since emerging from their four year hibernation in 2004 (just in time to reelect President George W. Bush), the Religious Right has returned to its extended state of unconsciousness. Oh, that's right, they did roll out of bed long enough to lobby for Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Alito. (No doubt, they were given a wake up call by the White House along with an invitation to dinner.)
